Please send a resume and portfolio of work to with desired job title and office location in the subject line. That’s why we seek out inquisitive and artistic designers to be part of DTJ—a group of wildly creative thinkers and thoughtful problem solvers. How you set up your bathroom can have an impact here, with wall-mounted toilets giving you easier access to cleaning the floor and organizational systems keeping everything looking neater. However, the real star of the show here is the material you opt for. In fact, if you’re looking for a way to make a splash in your bathroom, Neilson says swapping out a built-in bath for a free-standing tub can be a single project that makes the whole room feel more luxurious. In many homes, bathrooms are becoming less of a place for brushing teeth and washing hair and more of a place for relaxation and recharging.
Experience
If you’re still stumped on how to make your space more calming, Yacavone suggests taking a personal approach. From the personal to the bold to focusing on self-care and cutting down on cleaning time, here are some of this year’s biggest bathroom trends. Take a look at the 2024 Project Awards finalists in the gallery below.
DTJ DESIGN, Inc.
We are a group of responsive and creative designers providing architecture, planning, and landscape architecture with an integrated design approach. We engage the contextual and environmental sensitivities of a site, while thoughtfully integrating the total environment to bring about the best version of your vision. The success of your next project—whether it’s residential, resort, urban, or themed environments—depends upon creativity. It’s that vital blend of artistry, expertise, and market understanding that has allowed us to create remarkable spaces and destinations for more than 55 years. It’s how we’ve been able to create remarkable spaces and destinations around the globe from residential and resort environments to themed attractions and public places. While following the latest trends can be fun, lately designers have been seeing a shift towards homeowners going off the beaten bath and creating spaces that are uniquely their style.
PLANNING
DTJ blends artistry and function to realize added value in creating distinct neighborhoods and community destinations with meaningful open space and amenity areas. In Longmont, the 17-acre campus for Silicon Valley-based chipmaker Xilinx was “100 percent DTJ,” says Moore. The firm did “all of the architecture, all of the landscape architecture, all of the planning” for the R&D hub and conference center that opened on former farmland in 2002. Sustainable materials and fixtures are becoming increasingly important all around your home and the bathroom is no exception. And since many of your favorite brands are focusing on sustainability, that means that you don’t need to make sacrifices on style or luxury in order to make your space better for the environment.
It is crafting unique moments with a spirit of curiosity and excitement. It is a collaborative design process to give meaning to place, thoughtfully shaped to create unforgettable experiences and ultimately provide higher quality of life. Harper says that Moen noticed the popularity of matte black and even released a full collection called Greenfield where the hue is an option so homeowners can coordinate every fixture. “In recent years, we have seen a surge in the popularity of matte black finishes due to its versatility and ability to blend well with a variety of interior design styles,” she says. The bathroom is one of the most time-consuming rooms to clean, so it probably comes as little surprise that one of the most prominent emerging design trends is touches that focus on cutting down cleaning time.

Among the vintage bathroom trends we’re seeing are pendant accents and ornate details on bathtubs and other fixtures. We’ve also seen lighting designed to evoke the look of candlesticks and vintage-inspired colors like teal greens, rosy pinks, brass and gold. With an increased focus on self-care, modern bathrooms are far from an afterthought—they’re a place where homeowners can go to unwind, take off (or start) their day and show off their personal home design taste. That last point has become increasingly evident in the last year or so, as more homeowners want to make their homes feel uniquely theirs in every room. Most importantly, DTJ offers an exciting career working in an integrated design environment with great advancement opportunities. DTJ provides a vibrant and nurturing atmosphere for designers to excel within a collaborative studio of Architects, Landscape Architects, and Planners.
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
DTJ opened an Atlanta office in 2013, and it’s been another driver for growth. Director Todd Hill is a leader of the firm’s theme park work, and the design the $25 million renovation of Centennial Olympic Park is a high-profile local project for the office. “That’s tapping into a bigger market for us, not only regionally but in terms of work type,” says Moore. Future opportunities may include significant participation in marketing and business development.

McGee noted that she’s been loving all of the vintage elements coming back into popularity, including in her collection with Kohler, proving that these elements have staying power and will continue to be beloved. In Colorado, DTJ has a number of housing projects coming online in 2018, including developments at Stapleton in Denver, RidgeGate in Lone Tree and Centerra in Loveland. Williams points to Gateway Canyons Resort south of Grand Junction as a prime example of this integrated approach.

Homeowners are outfitting their bathrooms with spa-worthy accessories and many designers and brands are noticing. Recent trends include frameless, doorless steam showers, rain heads and built-in seating, according to a 2024 trend report by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). We’ve also noticed aromatherapy devices, heated floors and towel warmers to name a few comfortable upgrades. With deep roots in architecture, planning and landscape architecture, Boulder’s DTJ Design has helped lead the way for thoughtful development amid Colorado’s great outdoors for more than 50 years. From large-scale communities to intimate enclaves and mixed-use environments, DTJ’s site-sensitive planning adds value to real estate. As the framework for the community, we recognize that enduring projects integrate the built environment with the unforgettable characteristics of the land.

Other great ways to be more sustainable include using natural materials like bamboo, recycled glass or cork as well as low-VOC paints and finishes Oakley suggests. For many designers, this means tapping into fun elements and a sense of personalization. Essentially, if it speaks to you, it can likely have a place in your bathroom design.
If airy, natural materials aren’t your style, this next trend might be the bold statement you’ve been looking for—matte black is a general color trend for 2024, and it’s certainly popping up in many designer bathrooms. Some other inspiring ways we’ve seen designers take on this trend include natural materials on places like cabinets and fixtures designed to mimic natural features like leaves and waterfalls. Biophilic elements, or those that help us connect to nature, are a huge trend elsewhere in the home, so it’s no surprise that we’re also seeing these colors and design choices pop up in the bathroom space. One of the most significant shifts we’re seeing in the home industry right now is color palettes moving towards warmer, cozier tones, and bathroom design is no exception. Instead of stark whites, designers are incorporating more tans, off-whites, beiges and browns in these spaces.
